Newly Discovered
New species of manta rays are found
at Manta Reef, in the Guinjata Bay area.
There are
two types, which are not yet named and possibly a
third one as well – also appear visually distinct,
exhibiting unique colours and textures.
Little is known about the second,
lager species. It also has evolutionary remnants of
a spine and a harmless, non-stinging barb on its
tail.
Differences between the two species
lie in colour, skin texture and reproductive
biology. The smaller of the two species is not
migratory and often seen on our reefs were they get
cleaned at identified cleaning stations.
They are found all year round. We are
very lucky because in Mozambique this is the only
place were both species interact on the same reef.
We also spotted what we thought was a
Bow mouth Guitar shark, to be a Shark ray at
Guinjata. Also recently spotted the sea-moth /
dragon fish, which is not common to this area.
Lots of Whale sharks to be seen from
Late February till May.
